Our Story

Born in the ER.
Built to save time.

On Call Alerts was envisaged by a South African emergency room doctor who had seen first-hand how outdated communication workflows slow down critical care. We exist to close the gap between triage and the right specialist — in seconds, not minutes.

Our Mission

Closing the gap between triage and treatment

Dr Iain Monteith spent years working in emergency rooms across Johannesburg and grew increasingly frustrated by the delays, inefficiencies, and potential for error baked into traditional ER communication. Tracking down the right specialist, relaying clinical information accurately through a chain of calls and messages, and then confirming someone was actually on their way — it all took far too long for situations where every second counts.

Iain knew there had to be a better way. Teaming up with software engineer Jules de Ponte, they set out to build a tool that could cut the time from triage to specialist notification from several minutes down to seconds — with the full clinical picture included from the very first alert.

On Call Alerts is the result of that partnership: a mobile and web paging platform built by people who understand both medicine and technology, with a single stated goal — better, faster care for every patient who comes through an emergency room door.

"The right doctor, with the right information, at the right time — that's the difference between a good outcome and a tragedy. We built On Call Alerts so that the communication piece never has to be the weak link."

— Dr Iain Monteith, Co-Founder & COO

What We Stand For

The principles behind every decision we make

Speed Above All

In emergency situations, speed is critical. On Call Alerts cuts the time from triage to the correct specialists being notified from several minutes to seconds — because in an ER, every second genuinely matters.

🎯

Precision Routing

Contact only the doctors you need. On Call Alerts lets you page specific alert groups or individual clinicians directly, so the right people are notified without spamming the entire floor with irrelevant alerts.

🔒

Trust and Compliance

We capture only the data necessary to route an alert — no personally identifiable patient information. The service runs on a POPIA-compliant cloud provider, and full audit trails of every alert life-cycle ensure complete transparency.

🤝

Built with Clinicians

A practising medical doctor is a founding member of On Call Alerts and was integral to its development from day one. We continuously incorporate feedback from doctors in the field to make sure the product serves real clinical needs.

❤️

Patient-First Thinking

Everything we build is evaluated against one question: does this improve the delivery of healthcare to patients? That is our stated goal, our north star, and the measure by which we judge every product decision.

📊

Data-Driven Improvement

Through the audit dashboard and reports, hospital administrators can see exactly how their ER communication is performing and take informed decisions to continually improve their workflows — turning data into better care.

The Team

People who understand both medicine and technology

On Call Alerts was founded by two people with complementary skills and a shared frustration — one who lived the problem daily, and one who knew how to build the solution.

A mechanical engineer turned software developer, Jules graduated from the University of Johannesburg. He has been the driving technical force behind On Call Alerts, turning Iain's vision into a robust, real-world platform.

Our Journey

From a frustrating shift to a platform that changes emergency rooms

February 2026

The problem becomes personal

Observing the slow, frustrating, and costly ER communication workflow one shift too many prompted Dr Iain Monteith to ask a simple question: why isn't there something better? That question became a conversation with Jules de Ponte, and the idea for On Call Alerts was born.

May 2026

First prototype built and tested

Jules built the first working versions of the mobile and web apps. The prototype went through rigorous internal testing and feedback from medical professionals before being considered ready to take to market.

June 2026

On Call Alerts (Pty) Ltd is incorporated

The dream became a legal reality. On Call Alerts (Pty) Ltd was formally incorporated in South Africa, marking the transition from a side project born out of frustration to a company with a clear mission: faster, smarter emergency care communication.

Today

Let's see where this takes emergency rooms everywhere

We are just getting started. On Call Alerts is being introduced to emergency rooms and we are committed to listening, iterating, and growing the platform into the communication backbone that every ER deserves.
